This is understandable as Mike suffered from anxiety during this time, lived in a reclusive fashion, and you can hear the anger breaking out of his music. Does side one on this version fade in, or does it start cold? Hergest Ridge is different from any other album Mike did. The original pressing LP contains his original mix which is far superior to the Quad mix that he did for the Boxed set which is quite muddy. Part one is superb as it gently whistles in and builds up very subtly. Side two is where it fails though. Unlike it's predecessor Tubular Bells which has two equally great parts, Hergest part two is good until the big fat, loud multilayered guitar and organ section, goes on and on and on and ruins the tranquility and beauty of the album as a whole. Oldfield settled into his new home but soon felt unsure with his next career move. Side two is where it fails though.
