But veteran comet spotter Michael Mattiazzo, who took the photo at the top of this story, thinks there's a decent chance Neowise will have more staying power than Swan or Atlas. It was notable for being the brightest comet in over 20 years, since the Hale-Bopp comet passed by in 1997.
Hubble's image is centered on the comet's nucleus, which is too small to be seen, as it is estimated to measure no more than 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) across. The “averted vision” technique is what comet-hunters use to see these objects properly. This glow measures around 11,000 miles across in the image and shows the detail at which the Hubble is able to take photos.“Hubble has far better resolution than we can get with any other telescope of this comet,” Caltech graduate student Qicheng Zhang said in a Dark-adaption requires some patience, but it’s worth it—you’ll see more stars, perhaps even the Milky Way (if you’re in a dark location away from light pollution) and you’ll more easily find the comet.
