On paper, New Radicals’ “You Get What You Give” isn’t drastically different than many of the other one-hit wonders of the late ’90s. "Following the mass media's excitement about the celebrity insults, Alexander explained that the verse, along with the lines directly preceding it ("Health insurance rip off lying / The drums on the album's title track were sampled from the Although no third single was released, there are some (conflicting) clues as to what would have been the third single: certain promotional copies of In addition to the songs released on the United States version of In the years following New Radicals' breakup, Alexander worked with artists such as Since their breakup, the New Radicals' songs have been used for several commercials and trailers (for example the trailer to 1999's New Radicals promotional photo, featuring Alexander (second from left) and Brisebois (second from right) plus members of their touring group. Late '90s one hit wonder didn't make much of a splash after its hit single 'Get What You Give' (the music video is a personal fave). It was an international hit, the first and most successful single from their album Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too. New Radicals (stylized as Иew Radicals) was an American alternative rock band active from 1997 to 1999. The band centered on frontman Gregg Alexander, who wrote and produced all of their songs. As he recalled in the same 2014 interview, he was disappointed that these fame-preoccupied lines took precedence over the other, more pointed lyrics: “To notice that everybody focused on the so-called ‘celebrity-bashing’ lyric instead of this lyric that was talking about the powers-that-be that are holding everybody down… That was something that I was kind of disillusioned by.” (Manson was upset for another reason, as The attention given to his critique of fame underscored his distaste for the culture’s emphasis on celebrity attention, something else that would only grow more intense and pervasive in the coming years.
It reached number 30 on Billboard Hot 100 Airplay in January 1999, number 36 on the overall Hot 100 and number eight on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. Courtesy MCA. Apart from many concerts and festivals, the tour also included several live performances on the radio, appearances on The album was followed on November 17, 1998 by the release of their first single, "When asked about it in an interview, Marilyn Manson replied he was "not mad that [Alexander] said he'd kick my ass, I just don't want to be used in the same sentence with Courtney Love" and would "crack his skull open if I see him. Musically, it’s vaguely alternative-sounding, between the electric guitar corkscrews and optimistic piano chords popping out of the mix here and there, although it possesses enough of an accessible pop sheen to explain why it scraped the bottom of the Top 40. “My favorite artists—Prince, [David Lee] Roth-era Van Halen, even Madonna when she was doing cutting-edge work—they were mysteries to me and my friends,” Alexander said in 2014. So that was some of what I idealized and thought would be more present in my life as an artist.”So even though “You Get What You Give” stayed in the mainstream’s consciousness during the next 15 years, Alexander retreated from the public eye, at least under his own name.
