According to the well-known Slovenian dancer and choreographer <link http://www.festivalmaribor.si/en/performers/jasmina-krizaj/>Jasmina Križaj
, who put ballet on hold very early on and decided to develop her own style of free movement, Bach’s music already incorporates everything that is needed for a dance performance. It only has to be captured in the female and male motion and a story has to be created.
A novelty of this year’s Festival Maribor is definitely the incorporation of a modern dance. The dance performance entitled <link http://www.festivalmaribor.si/en/program/main-program/concert-no-10/>False Entries
was created in cooperation between Plesna izba Maribor (Maribor Dance Room) and a festival organised by Ensemble Baroque de Toulouse, France.
This performance deals with the topic of constant cycles between beginnings and ends in our lives and will be delivered by Jasmina Križaj and <link http://www.festivalmaribor.si/en/performers/simon-wehrli/>Simon Wehrli
, a Swiss dancer and choreographer. A selection of Bach pieces will be performed by the Festival Maribor Chamber Music Ensemble.
<link http://www.festivalmaribor.si/en/program/main-program/concert-no-10/>FALSE ENTRIES

Friday, 13 September at 4 p.m., courtyard of Vetrinjski dvor (in case of bad weather – Theatre Hall in Vetrinjski dvor) – First performance in Slovenia
Free Entry.

and
are two brilliant guitarists who have reached for the stars and got them – that is, however, basically all they have in common.
Miloš is a handsome brilliant classical guitar player with a Mediterranean charm and an unsurpassed musicality. His devotion to the classical guitar has left the critics breathless and the audience stunned. The magazine Gramophone depicted Karadaglić as the most promising artist of the year and his debut album with the record company Deutsche Grammophon –
– as one of the best-selling debut albums of classical music in the world.
At the Maribor Festival we shall witness a virtuous solo performance by Miloš who will bring the atmosphere of the southern charisma right into the hall.

Samo comes from Slovenia and is an international star everywhere, except in Slovenia. In the world of jazz he is known as one of the most interesting European guitarists and jazz composers, the magazine Guitar Player describes him as one of the 10 hottest guitarists in the world. All About Jazz depicted him as one of the most naturally gifted modern guitar geniuses. He is one of fwe Slovenian artists to be mentioned in the book The Penguin Jazz Guide where his original music is listed as one of the 1001 best albums in the history of jazz music.
When he’s not on the tour he can be found living in Maribor where he is only able to survive because he blends in with the city. He is currently finishing his PhD and is also working on several different projects. His newest project with the classical string orchestra as part of this year’s Festival Maribor in coproduction with Slovene Philharmonic String Chamber Orchestra is just one of his projects which were inspired by composers such as so Bartók, Stravinski, Messiaen, Lutosławski, Šostakovič and Dutilleux.

Festival Maribor is in its fifties. It is, however, able to keep its youthful appearance with stylish transformations. The Festival is keeping step with current trends but is at the same time preserving its timeless virtue in the sense of Less is more. Thus the Festival’s magic formula for its congruity focuses on the principles of chamber music making, which are presented in chamber as well as symphonic displays.
When we view chamber music principles as harmonious dialogues among friends, we cannot disregard this year’s cooperation with the concert series <link http://www.musikabendegraz.at/en/concerts/2013>MusikAbende Graz
.
The following protagonists from the MusikAbende will present themselves in Maribor:
<link http://www.festivalmaribor.si/en/performers/lily-francis/>Lily Francis
coming from the USA excels on the violin and viola, <link http://www.festivalmaribor.si/en/performers/reinhard-latzko/>Reinhart Latzko
is a German cellist with an international reputation, and last but not least, <link http://www.festivalmaribor.si/en/performers/christian-schmidt/>Christian Schmidt
, the very versatile pianist who is also the artistic director of the series.

In their hall Congress Graz, MusikAbende will also be hosting Festival Maribor with its own dazzling musicians; <link http://www.festivalmaribor.si/en/performers/bostjan-lipovsek/>Boštjan Lipovšek
, <link http://www.festivalmaribor.si/en/performers/janez-podlesek/>Janez Podlesek
and <link http://www.festivalmaribor.si/en/performers/rok-palcic/>Rok Palčič
will be accompanied by an old friend of the Festival Maribor, the solo-oboist of the Israel Philharmonics, <link http://www.festivalmaribor.si/en/performers/dudu-carmel/>Dudu Carmel
.

<link http://www.festivalmaribor.si/en/program/main-program/concert-no-3/>BETWEEN JOY AND MISERY

Saturday, 7 September at 19:30, Union Hall, Maribor
<link http://www.festivalmaribor.si/en/program/main-program/concert-no-5/>SPARKLING INTERACTION

Monday, 9 September at 19:30, Congress Graz, Chamber Music Hall
We have organized a bus shuttle for both concerts.
You can purchase individual tickets online at
, at all
ticket-shops and selected post offices in Slovenia.

Since their last year's remarkable premiere performance of The Magic Flute, it has become quite a challenge to acquire an entrance ticket for any performance at the most daring of Berlin Operas, the
. With this performance in the style of silent films by Buster Keaton, the new director and producer Barrie Kosky reached the Parnassus of great opera producers. Despite the fact that the number of in-house performances has increased greatly since his arrival, we succeded to organise guest performances and a coproduction between the Orchestra of the Comic Opera Berlin and the Festival Maribor.

We shall witness a splendid orchestra – which resides in one of the most dynamic European capitals – in four concerts and many different settings. They are going to present themselves under the direction of their chief conductor
Nánási, under the renowned conductor of film music
and as a chamber ensemble under the guidance of the head violin
.
With Berlin musicians coming to Maribor, their faithful audience is bound to follow; whereas our own Slovenian audience has gotten the taste of the coming guest performances with our young Papagena and Papageno –
and
– in the streets of Maribor.

Do MORE with LESS. This has always been a guideline of the Maribor Festival. Either musical aesthetics or financial dietetics. With the former we wish to and with the latter we have to strive for the minimum in order to achieve the maximum effect.
Having gained MORE or LESS a lot of experience, in this year we have LESS financial means as our disposal and are facing MORE challenges and new dimensions of cooperation.
In a crucial time important musical institutions have lend us a helping hand: Comic Opera Berlin, MusikAbende Graz, Plesna izba Maribor and our longstanding partner Slovene Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra Association. With their respective coproduction shares they made an important contribution to the quality of the festival.
For more information about the events, please see <link http://www.festivalmaribor.si/en/ _blank>www.festivalmaribor.si/en
.
We are looking forward to having you with us once again.

When heading to an event at the Maribor Udarnik cinema one expects EVERYTHING but evening gowns and Vivaldi on Stradivarius violins. EVERYTHING is clear, you may say, although the main protagonist of the evening, the wonderful
, will replace her violin with a microphone and give us EVERYTHING she has, singing songs from the legendary singer Nick Drake and the rock band Radiohead.
But this is hardly EVERYTHING that you are about to hear. The members of the electro-acoustic ensemble ACO Underground will be joined by
, known to the wider audience for his collaboration with the legendary Midnight Oil, and as the bass guitarist and co-founder of the American pop-folk-rock band Violent Femmes. We probably won’t have the chance to see Brian in a tailcoat, but nevertheless – EVERYTHING indicates that he might surprise us with fantastic Serious music…
EVERYTHING is fine, in fact... EVERYTHING is great! But where does EVERYTHING lead to?
To an electrifying, radically composed performance with classical, popular and experimental music including video installations by
, consisting of two parts under one title - EVERYTHING.
The role of the Master of Ceremonies has been entrusted to the acclaimed actor and comedian
, who will deliver a show where truly EVERYTHING is possible… even a visit from her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II.
