Sidney Poitier’s 7 Most Memorable Performances A brilliant adaptation of the future and that is way better than the updated version that John McTiernan released which to this day cannot hold a candle to this science fiction masterpiece that was released in 1975. This film may very well have been an influence on The Running Man and The Hunger Games, but those films (and the books they were based on) are entertaining, clever and sometimes profound.
Director Norman Jewison has far more luck with his staging of the Rollerball matches (they're at once exciting and horrifying) than scripter William Harrison has in condemning this futureworld with anything more than boilerplate lip service. I first saw this film in my early teens and loved it. In a corporate-controlled future, an ultra-violent sport known as Rollerball represents the world, and one of its powerful athletes is out to defy those who want him out of the game. November 27, 2019 In a future world ruled by industrialists, "civilized" society has removed violent activity and a new sport, rollerball, has emerged. Someone already mentioned the sequel Futureworld (1976). Ignore the remake - this is the one. Having watched it for the first time im afraid I have to disagree.The film is very good with an excellent performance from James Caan but I consider "Planet of the Apes","Star Wars","Logans Run" and many others to be far superior to "Rollerball". New York 10th Anniversary Gala This film has stood the test of time and is one of my favourite cult films, even though it did good business at the box office. William Harrison wrote the original short story, 'Roller Ball Murder' published in 1973 by Esquire Magazine.
