To further add to this impression, the cover artwork suggests a definite story. From the depths of solitude to the joy of being together - "Ommadawn" tells the whole story. To put it differently: It's a timeless album. Keep in mind the youth of the composer, who, at 17 composed Hergest Ridge and at 18 Tubular Bells (They were released in reverse order)now started to achieve a mature style with Ommadawn. This is yet another fantastic album (if you can still use this term), though only two songs they were in his usual style that never gets old. Disabling it will result in some disabled or missing features. Indeed, Oldfield seems to be a victim of his own success—“Tubular Bells” launched his career, and he has occasionally issued sequels or revised or updated versions of his monster hit record. For years the "Bells" sequels were prohibitively expensive but are now available in deluxe editions with extra material and copious liner notes. For me, this is haunting and full of wonderful memories. It' been over 40 years since the original Ommadawn in 1975. I do like it now. WOW...an achingly beautiful return to form that could only be Mike Oldfield. Ever since changing over to CD's I've wished he would release this album. The "extra" disc appears almost like an afterthought, crammed into the outer cardboard sleeve. Interestingly, this edition includes a DVD disc with 5.1 mixes of the original album (but no 5.1 of the extra tracks on the more recent remaster, which is included in the package as a 2-ch CD). Because sometimes, things just make sense. The thing I loved about Tubular Bells and Tubular Bells II was that it seemed Mike Oldfield stripped off everything from Tubular Bells leaving only a skeleton, and then created a new skin over it which was Tubular Bells II. Reprise of Oldfield’s third By David Stubbs February 22, 2017 When Mike Oldfield released his Ommadawn album in 1975, the world was at his feet. This is a piece that works on every level, and it's before he decided that songs were what he should be doing. If you have never heard this man's work, I would urge you to start with this cd. "Tubular Bells" hooked me.
I'll start by saying that the original Ommadawn is not only my favorite MO album, it is my favorite album ever - and I own over 1500 albums. I listened to it first online and was captivated. The haunting melodies are bound to pull you in and make you "see" what Mike is trying to convey. Select your address Despite a catalogue of 26 albums, he is still best-known for his landmark debut hit in 1973. Your recently viewed items and featured recommendations For me, this is haunting and full of wonderful memories. His playing has matured wonderfully. And I'm sure I'll like it even more the more times I listen to it. This review is for the version that has a CD and DVD with a 5.1 mix. Consider that, here with Dolby Digital, the 5+1 channels are crammed into a 448 kbit/s compressed stream. But Oldfield is now creating his music with a maturity of a man who has developed an exquisite sense of proper balance. Your recently viewed items and featured recommendations Like its progenitor, “Return” is a thematically tight, two-track exploration of a musical landscape.
I didn't think it was such a great album at first. Your recently viewed items and featured recommendations His newest effort displays the confidence and experience of an accomplished musician who knows how to get the music exactly as he imagines it with today’s digital recording and mixing technologies.Didn't grab me like the original, but it's growing on me.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. It's like a Celtic tone poem. From the choral backdrop of Part One to the poignant guitar of Part Two , and all parts in between, we are reminded of the majesty of music, from any corner of the world. I found "Hergest Ridge" pleasant but a tad New Agey; "Ommadawn" by contrast is an early exploration into what would soon be called World Music. The romantic idea of getting lost in nature's grasp is strong in "Ommadawn". Also, Mike goes back and uses many instruments from the period of the late 70's and even started with a metronome to go back to the old way of doing things. Disabling it will result in some disabled or missing features. “Return to Ommadawn” is the first direct “sequel” that hasn’t been a retread of some sort of the Tubular Bells theme.

Those albums grabbed me from the very first notes and I couldn't wait to play them over and over again. This new work, Return to Ommadawn, owes it’s musical heritage to many of his works of the 70s and 80s.
In some way, it's an anarchronistic album. Unlike “Guitars,” and some of Oldfield’s recent offerings, however, the sound on this album is less processed; more organic. But the more times I listened to it, the more the beauty of it began to unfold for me. I must disagree with Mr. Oldfield as the original version that was released on vinyl LP's was the best..... A credible musician, respected by such left-field collaborators as Robert Wyatt and Kevin Ayers, he had also achieved superstardom with the shock, runaway success of his debut, 1973’s Tubular Bells. I was initially very disappointed to find that the 5.1 encoding is only offered in Dolby Digital, which typically is the worst sounding of the various 5.1 encodings. It is not a rehash of the past, it only makes me hope this is a glimpse of his future work where maturity, experience, new technology and his continued passion to deliver unbelievably beautiful music to us will continue to come.
This is the best he's given us in a while and IT'S ALL BEEN GREAT.
After all these years I'm still listening to them and still hearing new things. (Amazon really needs to stop lumping different editions of a product together into a single listing, _especially_ ones that come from different countries.) I have hoped for years to hear him return to the extended suites that are his signature.
